The month of Movember

comments(0)

(Al Jazeera) Since 2003, when it was started in Australia, November has turned into Movember. Movember is a global fundraising event where, for the 30 days of November, men (and less often, women) grow a moustache (or a mo') to raise awareness about mens' health, particularly prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer for men in the U.K., where 100 are diagnosed each day and more than 10,000 die from it each year. One in every six men in the U.S. will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime. Starting the month with a clean-shaven face, men from around the world, especially in Canada and Australia - the top two fundraising countries involved in the campaign - grow a moustache to raise money for research and hopefully start conversations about men's health. This year has been the most successful yet, with over CAD$91 million raised, and that's without having counted all of the money. Last year US$72 million was raised for prostate cancer research.
