Audio Slideshow: Writing on the walls

A collection of words and messages photographed in public spaces throughout Halifax

Writing found on the walls is one of the most basic and immediate forms of communication. The messages that we leave in our public spaces are born out of a range of motivations from whimsy or jest to a desperation to express the will of those underrepresented by government and media. Paying attention to your surroundings, you start to get the feeling of a city, be it opinion, humour, outrage, or hate. These anonymous voices sketch out a personality of the people who live there. The messages on Halifax's buildings paint a picture of communities that value art and intellect, and are keenly aware of the political climate that we live in. They express hope to build a more compassionate way of living while questioning authority and holding those who abuse it accountable.
