The Students’ Council of Mount Saint Vincent University adopted an emergency response policy that places power in the hands of the council when dealing with an emergency on union property.

“It is imperative that the MSVUSU devise a set plan for dealing with the threat of epidemics, both natural and unnatural disasters as well as providing adequate avenues to support and service our students,” said council president Jeremy Neilson at the MSVUSU annual general meeting.

The policy was implemented to better manage student needs during an epidemic, terrorism, infrastructure instabilities, and other possible situations.

In accordance with the university’s emergency response plan, the union will contact emergency response services.

In case of a natural/un-natural disasters, the union will:

  • Assess the incident before moving forward in an adequate direction
  • Contact emergency response services when regarding students' union property
  • If structural damage is present, the union shall close affected services immediately
  • Space of the union will be utilized for quarantines, shelters, counselling, and distribution sites for medical assistance
  • Provide support on a personal and monetary level

“The need for the policy stems from our dedication to providing the best possible student experience for all those within the mount community,” said Neilson.
