New overnight parking space
City council approved a new overnight parking lot
City council approved a motion Tuesday night to turn the Bloomfield community centre's parking lot into a space for overnight parking. For $15 a month, residents can get their vehicles off the street and avoid a ticket.
Halifax is currently under an overnight parking ban in which cars parked on the street from 1 a.m. to 7 a.m. could face fines. The purpose of the ban is to give snowplows room to remove snow, but some councillors say a blanket parking ban goes too far.
Councilor Sue Uteck says she's received complaints from a student whose car was ticketed when it was left out on a balmy, 10C night. While creating more parking spots is a good thing, she says the parking problem in Halifax is "a lack of space, a lack of common sense."
However, Uteck also says that she will have no sympathy for anyone who leaves their car on the streets Wednesday night. Halifax is supposed to be hit by a mix of rain and snow.
At least two people so far have reserved spots at the Bloomfield centre. Bloomfield is in the north end of Halifax, where many of the homes are older and have no driveways. The low rent also makes it popular among university students.
