Video: Dalhousie Memorial arena requires helmets for all
Skaters recognize the importance of wearing a helmet.
As of Jan. 1, 2010, all skaters have to wear a helmet at Dalhousie Memorial Arena.
According to Lisa Sansgter, a nursing student at Dal, there was a small drop in skaters. Overall, the feedback from the skaters has been positive.
Sansgter, along with another nursing student, has been monitoring Memorial Arena's skaters before and after the helmet rule was implemented. It's part of her community service requirement.
Since last fall, they have counted how many skaters were coming to the free skate periods and if they were wearing helmets. The student nurses also looked at the helmets, to see if they were fitted or loose. On the ice, they counted the collisions and falls and whether or not the skaters were wearing helmets.
Then, the nurses set up educational displays and let people knew about the upcoming rule. People were also invited to give their opinion.
This winter, the nurses will continue to record the numbers of skaters. They will also keep putting a display in the arena's lobby to educate skaters about head injuries.

I do not appreciate the way my comment was manipulated and modified. I was approached by 2 journalism students on my way out of the Dalhousie rink with my son this past Sunday after our family skate and asked to comment on the new helmet rule. This clip neither reflects the true nature of our comments, nor holds true to the type of article we were told it was being contributed to. I am really dissapointed in the misrepresentation.
