With six universities within a 10-kilometre radius, Halifax is indeed a university city. There are many choices for students when it comes to restaurants, bars and pubs. Here are some bars and restaurants in downtown Halifax that have food and drink specials that fit a student budget.

Halifax Alehouse:

Located in a historic building on Brunswick Street, the Halifax Alehouse offers food and drink deals four nights a week. With a rustic atmosphere that has a true East Coast feel, visitors can socialize with friends while enjoying live music every night of the week.

For chicken wing lovers, the Alehouse has a special on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday evenings from 4:30 p.m until 10 p.m where you can get a pitcher of Budweiser and 10 wings for $11.50 plus tax. A word of caution: the mild wings are hot so if you aren't into spicy foods, the barbeque or honey garlic might be a better option for you.

Where to go for cheap wings, beer and martinis

On Thursdays from 4:30 p.m. until 10 p.m. the Alehouse has a deal where you can order a tray of nachos and a pitcher of Budweiser for $12 plus tax.

Fireside:

If you're looking for cheap martinis, the Fireside is the place to go on Monday nights, as you can get a 2oz martini for just $5. The ambience is casual yet cozy with several fireplaces located throughout the restaurant.  The "Pom Pom" (with pomegranate vodka and cranberry) and "Purple Haze" (with Blue Curacao, cranberry and sprite) are just two of the 20 tasty martinis on the menu. It is located on Brunswick Street just off Spring Garden Road.

The Fickle Frog:

While the atmosphere is far from unique, The Fickle Frog is conveniently located on Spring Garden Road, just a short walk from Dalhousie, Saint Mary's and King's. Tuesdays are popular among students who aren't fickle. Tacos are just $2 each and shots are just $4. The Fickle Frog offers unlimited spaghetti for $7 on Thursdays as well as pints of beer for $3.75 each.

Bubba Rays Sports Bar:

Bubba Rays was named Halifax's best sports bar, and as having the best chicken wings in 2011 by The Coast.  Thursday night is wing night ($0.45 per wing with a drink purchase), which is popular among university students. With 60 different sauces to choose from, you can play it safe or be adventurous and try something new. You can get a pitcher of Coors Light or Canadian to complement your wings for just $9.99. The atmosphere is what you might expect from a sports bar with 50 LCD televisions. Bubba Rays is located on Spring Garden Road just above Il Mercato Trattoria.

Split Crow:

Similar to the Halifax Alehouse, the Split Crow has an authentic East Coast pub atmosphere with a high wood-beamed ceiling, located in a historic building. Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Saturday afternoons from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. are Molson power hours and 10 oz draughts of beer are just $2.50 each. Saturdays at Split Crow are usually busy as many students show up for breakfast and stay until power hour. There is also a live band on Saturday afternoon that attracts locals and tourists alike. Split Crow is located on Granville Street, just south of Barrington Street.
